Hair Colouring Naturally
There are many proven natural methods of changing hair colour or eliminating grey. Some have been passed down through the centuries. But before we consider these age-old, non-synthetic methods, let us look into modern scientific literature on colouring grey hair through vitamin supplements.
There have been many experiments, particularly with the so-called anti-grey vitamins, PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid), calcium pantothenate, choline and inositol, and although thousands of people now use these products and claim they help, legal restrictions on vouching for such vitamin therapy are so stringent that no reliable vitamin producer will allow himself to be quoted on this subject at this time, although privately they admit they have seen results.
Dr. Garlton Fredricks advises using these vitamins in a strong B complex base and also eating milk, brewer's yeast, whole wheat, whole rye, shellfish such as oysters, clams, shrimps, and meats such as liver, sweetbreads, pork and ham. He warns that it will take a while to achieve results.
PABA had been used in two experiments by Dr. Benjamin Sieve of Boston on patients who had had grey hair from 2 to 24 years. In 3 to 8 weeks the 800 grey-haired patients who were given this vitamin showed hair changes. Those who had had light hair before they were grey now had dirty-yellowish hair, and those who had dark hair before they were grey found that their hair changed to a darker, dusty greyish colour. While these particular experiments are not conclusive, they indicate that PABA may have an effect on grey hair.
Other suggestions from nutritionists include drinking a mixture of 2 tablespoons each of cider vinegar, uncooked honey and blackstrap molasses in a glass of water. This can be taken every morning on getting up. It is also re-energizing to the system.
Plant and Vegetable Hair Colouring
Most of the dyes on the markets today are aniline, which is a coal-tar product. Peter Morell, in Poisons, Potions and Profits, says, 'Hair dyes probably lead the list as the most dangerous of all widely used cosmetics. Aniline dyes can be very injurious to those who are sensitive to such chemicals, and the damage may be of such varied nature that it would be difficult to trace the dye that causes it.'
Our forebears discovered the value of leaves, barks, roots, nuts and flowers as colouring material, and over the centuries various combinations came into use. Dark women in Greece and Rome sometimes dyed their hair golden with a mixture of quince juice and privet, while the raven-haired women of Turkey created a supple, shiny, black effect on their hair with a preparation of gallnuts, first dried in oil and rubbed in salt and then added to a complicated combination of crushed pomegranate flowers, gum arabic, henna and that uniquely Turkish invention, rastik-yuki, which is a combination of iron and copper.
Arab women, on the other hand, used just henna for auburn shades or henna and indigo to create a blue-black combination, or for simpler effect an essence made of green oranges steeped in oil for several weeks to conquer grey hair.
Many of the plant and vegetable substances which are useful for dyeing can be added to your herbal shampoo.
To Turn Grey Hair Dark
People have always spent a lot of time and money working out 'waters' to darken the hair to its original colour. Ralph Harry points out that it is unlikely that such historical personages as Marie Antoinette or Sir Thomas More suddenly turned grey while in prison. 'Hair washes and dyes have been known since the earliest days,' writes Harry. 'In the case of political and other prisoners, it is more than likely that those incarcerated no longer had access to their favourite dye. Uncharitable, but possibly a much more likely scientific explanation of any such occurrence.'
Among the dyes for darkening hair and hiding the grey are infusions of leaves of the wild vine, artichoke, mulberry tree, figtree, raspberry bush, myrtle; decoctions of roots of the holm-oak and caper tree; decoction of barks of the willow, walnut tree and pomegranate; decoction of shells of beans, gall and cypress nuts; green shells of walnuts, ivy berries, cockles; red beet seeds, poppy flowers, alum. Also sage, marjoram, balm, betony, laurel infusions.
The Arabs use the essence of green oranges steeped in oil for several weeks to restore colour to greying black hair. An old recipe says your hair will turn black if, after you have washed it, you dip your comb in oil-of-tartar and comb it through three times a day while in the sun.
Dried or fresh sage will darken grey hair. It can be added to the shampoo and also used as a rinse. Make a strong infusion of at least 4 tablespoons to a pint of boiling water, and apply the strained and steeped liquid with a sponge or cotton-wool to the roots of the hair. A long-lasting sage hair-darkener can be made with a pint of dark sage tea, a pint of bay rum, and one ounce of glycerine. Bottle and label and apply to roots each night until hair reaches desired colour.
Tag alder root, or Red alder, produces another dye which will gradually darken the hair brown. You can experiment with the amount needed but can make a weak solution with one ounce and a pint of boiling water. Simmer for 20 minutes, steep for several hours, strain and use with sponge or cotton-wool on roots of hair. To preserve, use the same proportions of bay rum and glycerine as in the sage recipe.
